Henry Kissinger was born Heinz Alfred Kissinger in Fürth, Weimar Republic. He and his family fled to the United States when he was 15 because his family were Jews. Kissinger attended the City College of New York but could not graduate because he was drafted into the army. He finally got his degree, MA and Ph.D. at Harvard College.
Kissinger was sworn in as Secretary of State in 1973. He is attributed for opening relations with China, negotiating the Paris Peace Accords and ending American involvement in the Vietnam War. He is also criticized for U.S. involvement in the 1973 Chilean coup and U.S. support for Pakistan during the Liberation War of Bangladesh.
